FAQ's

Does concrete affect soil pH in planters?

No. Concrete planters from Blinde Design don't alter soil pH, because the soil never touches the concrete. Every piece in the planter range is engineered around a pot-in-pot system: a purpose-built waterproof inner pot with a drip tray sits inside the concrete outer shell, keeping roots, soil, and moisture fully separated from the material around them.

That separation matters. Uncoated cement mixes can leach lime over time, which may raise soil alkalinity and affect acid-loving plants. Blinde Design removes that pathway entirely through the pot-in-pot design, a principle built into every planter in the range using Fluid™ Concrete Technology, so you can plant camellias, blueberries, gardenias, or any pH-sensitive species without recalibrating your soil mix.

The concrete shells are also non-toxic by formulation, free from asbestos, formaldehyde, silica, and heavy metal salts, and finished with a waterproof nano-coating that protects the shell from internal moisture. Use the supplied inner pot and drip tray, and the plant sits in its own stable growing environment.

Are Blinde Design planters suitable for both indoor and outdoor use?

Blinde Design planters are engineered for both indoor and outdoor use across the Classic and Stitch ranges, with Fluid Concrete and a nano-coating barrier that handles the transitions most furniture can't.

Moving a planter outside exposes it to UV, rain and temperature swings that the nano-coating and moisture-resistant concrete are built to withstand, so finishes in Natural, Graphite and Bone stay true season after season. Bringing one indoors changes the priority to floor protection: specify a purpose-built waterproof inner pot with a drip tray so watering and damp soil never reach timber, stone or carpet below. No mechanical fixing is required either way, so repositioning between a terrace and a foyer is a lift-and-place decision.

Do Blinde Design planters have drainage holes?

Blinde Design planters do not have drilled drainage holes. Classic series planters incorporate a built-in drainage cell and internal plant bag, paired with a waterproof nano-coating that protects the concrete from internal moisture. The Stitch series is designed for displaying potted plants rather than direct planting, and includes no drainage system.

Both series use a pot-in-pot configuration. A purpose-built waterproof pot with a drip tray sits inside the Blinde planter, and that inner pot handles all watering and drainage. Direct planting into the concrete shell is not recommended, as prolonged exposure to damp soil can compromise the integrity of the concrete vessel.

Blinde Design's Fluid™ Concrete Technology means moisture management is engineered into the system by design, not dependent on drilled holes that can compromise structural integrity over time.

Will concrete planters crack in cold climates or freezing temperatures?

No. Blinde Design concrete planters are engineered to withstand freeze-thaw cycles in cold climates without cracking or requiring winter storage. This resilience comes from Fluid Concrete Technology, which addresses the root cause of cracking in traditional concrete.

Conventional concrete fails in freezing temperatures because it is porous: water infiltrates the material, freezes, expands 9% by volume, and fractures the internal structure from within. Fluid Concrete solves this through three key properties: it is non-hydraulic (doesn't absorb external moisture), fully cured with dimensional stability, and sealed inside and out with a waterproof nano-coating. Combined with unibody construction (no join lines where water accumulates), these features keep the planter intact through winter.

The single genuine moisture risk is internal. Damp soil in direct contact with the planter's interior can introduce water over time. A waterproof inner pot with a drip tray isolates the soil from the concrete itself. Seasonal sealer maintenance preserves the planter's durability further. Your Blinde Design planters are built for year-round use, outdoors, in any climate.

What plants work best in concrete planters?

The best plants for Blinde Design concrete planters are sculptural, architectural species that either complement or contrast with the planter's bold form. Fiddle-leaf figs, bird of paradise, olive trees, and ornamental grasses pair beautifully with the clean geometry of Fluid Concrete, creating layered visual interest. For mixed plantings in larger sizes, use a thriller-filler-spiller approach: one tall, dramatic focal plant, mid-height fillers for substance, and trailing spillers cascading over the edge.

Indoor plantings work best with low-light-tolerant species like peace lilies, ZZ plants, monstera, and philodendrons in smaller to mid-size planters. Larger indoor planters anchor statement plants such as fiddle-leaf figs or bird of paradise.

Outdoor plantings suit hardier, weather-resistant species: agave and succulents thrive in full sun; Japanese maple and lavender add seasonal colour; ornamental grasses and topiary forms introduce movement and texture. The concrete vessel's thermal mass creates a stable micro-climate that supports larger specimens.

Size your planting to the vessel. Smaller planters (25–50 cm) work well with herbs, small foliage plants, or delicate trailing specimens. Mid-size planters (50–75 cm) suit medium shrubs and mixed arrangements. Large planters (100–125 cm) accommodate statement trees and substantial specimen plants that become focal points in your outdoor room.

What is the difference between the Stitch and Classic planter series?

The choice between Stitch and Classic concrete planters depends on the design role each will play in your space. Stitch planters deliver a bold, sculptural statement through their rope-stitched embellishment and organic form. They work as focal points or conversation pieces, especially when grouped in complementary rope colours. Classic planters take a quieter approach: their cube proportions and ultra-smooth finish suit traditional or minimalist schemes where the planter shouldn't compete with surrounding elements. Both are crafted from Fluid Concrete in the same three colours and five sizes, making them technically equivalent in durability and weather resistance.

The real decision comes down to spatial role and design intent. Select Stitch for outdoor entertaining areas where you want the planter itself to draw attention: a patio corner, a garden feature, or an entryway where the rope detailing becomes part of the narrative. Choose Classic for permanent installations where plants are the hero, such as a terrace border, interior atrium, or anywhere you prefer the planter to support rather than dominate. You can also blend both series within a larger scheme: cluster multiple Classic planters for visual consistency, then anchor the arrangement with a single striking Stitch as an accent. This layered approach gives you design depth without visual chaos.

What is Fluid™ Concrete Technology?

Fluid™ Concrete Technology is Blinde Design's proprietary concrete blend engineered to deliver the endurance of concrete with the refinement of handcrafted design. The technology combines green cement and 95% recycled natural materials that absorb CO₂ during curing, creating a fully recyclable product. Its lightweight structure, enabled by advanced formulation rather than compromising durability, allows planters and outdoor furniture to feel sculptural and moveable whilst withstanding year-round weather. Every piece is cast in a unibody design, meaning no join lines and no mould marks, delivering the seamless aesthetic that defines Blinde's approach. The result is outdoor furniture that doesn't feel industrial or temporary; it evolves with your space over time.

What sizes do Blinde Design planters come in?

Blinde Design planters come in multiple sizes across two series: the Classic series and the Stitch series. Both series use the same 25 to 125 size scale. Classic follows a more traditional form whilst Stitch is a wide, low-profile oval with the signature rope accent.

Dimensions are listed as width x depth x height.

No mechanical fixing to floors is required at any size.

Are concrete planters heavy to move?

Blinde Design planters are designed to be repositioned without mechanical fixing, thanks to Fluid Concrete's thin-wall casting process that reduces mass compared to traditional cast concrete of the same visual volume. The smaller sizes are straightforward lifts; the largest formats need two people.

Blinde Design planter weight by size:

  • Smaller planters (around 25 cm) at roughly 10 to 16 kg [22 to 35 lb] are a one-person lift.
  • Mid-sized planters (around 50 cm) at 19 to 31 kg [42 to 69 lb] are an easy two-person lift.
  • Larger planters (75 to 125 cm) sit between 34 and 51 kg [75 to 112 lb]; two people can reposition them, and a furniture dolly or plant caddy helps over longer distances.

The weight works in your favour outdoors too: planters stay put in wind without anchoring, yet shift when you want to restyle a space.
