FAQ's
What is the difference between a fire table and a fire pit?
The key difference is functional design. Fire tables combine a flat tabletop surface (about 1,000 mm square) at coffee or dining height with an integrated bioethanol burner underneath; they're 2-in-1 pieces that hold plates, glasses, and decorative items by day and create flame by evening. Fire pits are sculptural centrepieces with minimal tabletop space, designed purely as atmospheric focal points; their varying heights (from 220 to 780 mm) make them sculptural objects first, heat sources second.
A fire table transforms your entertaining by anchoring a seating arrangement where guests can gather, dine, or socialise around a functional surface. A fire pit creates a 360-degree gathering experience around an artistic focal point; the flame draws everyone inward, regardless of seating arrangement. Fire tables suit intimate, directed settings; fire pits suit more open, circular gatherings.
Both use clean-burning bioethanol fuel with no smoke, ash, or residue. Fire tables hold larger burners (the AB8, delivering 20,433 BTU/h and heating up to 60 m²), whilst fire pits use smaller burners (the AB3, 5,800 BTU/h, heating up to 20 m²). When unlit, a fire table remains furniture; a fire pit is only decorative until the flame ignites.
Are fire tables worth the investment?
Yes, fire tables represent a sound investment, combining practical heat with enduring design quality. They function simultaneously as a table surface and heat source, built from materials engineered for decades of use, with none of the installation complexity of traditional fireplaces.
EcoSmart Fire fire tables use Fluid Concrete Technology, a lightweight, impact-resistant material that resists UV damage, staining, and mildew, paired with Grade A teak or Grade 304 stainless steel components. Maintenance is minimal: a concrete sealant every 6 months for residential use and optional teak oiling once or twice yearly. A protective cover further extends their lifespan.
Design versatility extends the value further. Bioethanol models work both indoors and outdoors, shifting underutilised spaces into year-round gathering places. With burn times of 7-9 hours per fill and no flue or gas line required, they deliver practical heat alongside ambient flame without permanent installation costs.
Certified to UL 1370, EN 16647, and CSA standards, and trusted by luxury hospitality installations globally, EcoSmart Fire tables are built for longevity. The investment pays dividends through reliable, low-maintenance performance over many years.
Is it safe to place a fire table on artificial turf?
No, EcoSmart Fire fire tables are not designed to be placed on artificial turf. Fire tables require minimum 12.5 mm [0.5 in] of underside airflow clearance, achieved through adjustable articulating feet that sit on level, solid surfaces. Artificial turf compresses unevenly and cannot provide the stable foundation needed for proper airflow underneath the unit.
Artificial turf also traps moisture under the fire table, preventing proper evaporation and potentially damaging the concrete surrounds over time. For optimal performance and longevity, place your fire table on level, solid surfaces such as patio stone, concrete slabs, or sealed decking. These surfaces support the articulating feet correctly and allow the essential underside ventilation that keeps your fire table operating safely and efficiently.
What fuel options are available for fire tables?
EcoSmart Fire gas fire tables offer two fuel options, each suited to different outdoor living philosophies: natural gas for seamlessly integrated permanent installations, and liquid propane for uncompromised flexibility.
Natural gas connects to your home's utility supply, delivering unlimited burn time with a consistent 65,000 BTU/hour output and push-button ignition. For properties with existing gas infrastructure or during new construction, this approach eliminates the visual and practical compromises of tank management, allowing your fire table to become a permanent outdoor room feature. The G16T burner is UL/ULC-listed to ANSI Z21.97-2017 and CSA 2.41-2017, with CE and UKCA certifications across international markets.
Liquid propane arrives in portable tanks, giving you identical 65,000 BTU/hour performance without installation infrastructure. This suits rental properties, newly developed gardens, or any space where permanent gas lines aren't practical. A standard tank delivers 8 to 20 hours of burn time depending on usage, making propane ideal for flexibility without compromise. Tank refills and storage are routine logistics, far outweighed by placement freedom.
Both systems meet the same rigorous safety and performance standards. The choice reflects your vision for your garden: choose natural gas if your fire table is a permanent architectural element; choose propane if flexibility and independence matter most.
How do outdoor fire tables affect property value?
Multi-furniture functional fire tables add measurable appeal to outdoor entertaining spaces, which buyers at the premium end of the market assess as functional rooms rather than optional extras. A fire table installed on a terrace or patio creates a year-round gathering anchor that signals considered investment in outdoor living, photographs well in property listings, and demonstrates that an outdoor space has been planned from the outside in.
Unlike gas or wood-burning fire features, bioethanol fire tables require no permanent infrastructure. There is no gas line, chimney, or structural modification, which means the feature adds lifestyle appeal without the construction cost or ongoing commitment that permanent installations carry. Buyers cautious about permanent outdoor additions can view a fire table as an asset that moves with the owner.
At the premium end of the property market, outdoor spaces read as high-value when they are entertaining-ready across multiple seasons. A fire table is a design piece that earns its place as everyday furniture and transforms into a fire feature by evening, broadening the perceived usability of an outdoor room.
What are fire tables and how do they work?
Fire tables are multi-furniture functional pieces that pair a usable table surface with an integrated bioethanol burner, working as everyday outdoor furniture by day and an open-flame gathering place by evening. As a heat source, they run on liquid bioethanol fuel poured into a stainless steel burner set within the table, so there is no gas line, no flue, and no electrical connection.
To operate one, fill the burner from the supplied jerry can, then light it with the supplied lighting rod. Flames settle within a few minutes and burn for 7 to 9 hours per fill on the AB8 burner configuration used across the range. Because bioethanol combusts cleanly, you get smokeless fires with no ash or soot, just warmth and visible flame.
EcoSmart Fire fire tables are constructed from Fluid Concrete or Grade A teak and include articulating feet for level installation, a toughened glass fire screen, and burners certified to EN 16647 and UL 1370-16. The result is a table surface you use by day, and gather around by evening.
What wind protection do fire pit tables offer?
EcoSmart Fire pit tables are designed for multi-furniture functional use in exposed outdoor settings, managing wind through toughened ultra-low iron glass fire screens and, on selected models, internal XL Baffles built into the burner itself. Together these features steady the flame while keeping the fire fully visible from every seat around the table surface.
Wind matters more for bioethanol than people expect. Gusts disrupt combustion, push the flame off-centre, accelerate fuel consumption, and can extinguish the burner unexpectedly. The glass screens form a clear barrier around the burner opening, holding flame height steady and protecting burn time, preserving the even radiant warmth that makes a fire pit table the natural centrepiece of any outdoor gathering.
The XL Baffles sit inside the burner and regulate air movement across the fuel reservoir. Combustion stays consistent even as outdoor airflow shifts, and paired with a glass screen, the two systems handle most real-world breeze conditions without compromising the open-flame view.
For reliable wind protection:
- Position the table away from trees, large shrubs, or umbrellas that sway and create unpredictable gusts
- Avoid narrow corridors between walls where airflow accelerates
- Favour open ground or partially sheltered courtyards where breeze is steadier
Steady airflow around a fire pit table is easier to manage than turbulent air, so thoughtful siting amplifies what the screens and baffles already deliver.
Are fire tables safe to use on wooden decks?
Fire tables can be safely used on wooden decks when you follow specific installation and operation guidelines. EcoSmart Fire bioethanol fire tables are approved for combustible surfaces like wooden decking, with one critical requirement: a minimum ½ inch [12.5 mm] air gap between the ground and the underside of the appliance. The product's height-adjustable articulating feet create this essential clearance, preventing direct contact between the burner base and flammable materials.
Because bioethanol fires produce no sparks or embers, they're inherently safer for timber decking than wood-burning alternatives. However, timber protection matters. Unsealed or porous wooden decks should be protected from moisture and water runoff from the fire table's operation. Keep flammable materials at least 1 metre away while the fire is lit, and allow the unit to cool completely before refuelling.
Level installation on a hard, flat surface is essential. Don't place the fire table on grass, uneven ground, or surfaces that flex or settle. Following these guidelines, your EcoSmart Fire table becomes a durable, design-forward gathering feature that enhances your deck without compromising safety.
How much heat does a fire table produce?
EcoSmart Fire bioethanol fire tables produce between 15,000 and 20,433 BTU per hour, depending on burner configuration. The AB8 burner delivers 20,433 BTU/h (6 kW), whilst the XL900 burner delivers 15,000 BTU/h (4 kW), each matched to the table design for the ideal balance of output and burn time. Both configurations heat spaces up to approximately 60 m² [646 ft²], creating a comfortable zone for outdoor entertaining.
What makes bioethanol heating stand out is the efficiency: over 90% of the heat stays in your space rather than venting up a chimney. Unlike traditional fireplaces, you're not paying to warm the sky. The flame burns cleanly with no smoke or ash, so the warmth you feel is direct and unobstructed.
For larger gatherings or expansive outdoor areas needing primary heating, gas fire tables are available with significantly higher output. For intimate entertaining spaces and patio zones, bioethanol delivers the right amount of warmth without overheating a defined gathering area. The enclosed burner design also minimises heat loss on breezy evenings.
